Catriona Simpson

I’m a figurative painter based in Dunbar. My work is inspired by old photographs and explores ideas of time and memory. I’m interested in how images carry a sense of the past while remaining present.

I use colour deliberately to evoke feeling, building surfaces through layered paint. Figures move in and out of focus, sometimes clearly defined, sometimes only suggested.

Working in both acrylic and oil, I develop paintings through an active, responsive process. The work focuses on atmosphere and emotional tone rather than fixed narratives, creating spaces that feel familiar but open to interpretation.
