Karen Monaghan
I am a multi media artist focussing mainly on painting and silversmithing although there are adventures with other mediums in response to happenings around me. My work is inspired by the rural landscape of East Lothian and on further travels throughout Scotland. Being immersed in the vast landscape of mountains or the forests and coastline closer to home, gives rise to a reflective practice. Although I do sketch on location, I rarely complete a piece, feeling the need to be fully involved in my surroundings. To me, the weather evokes a visceral response as well as a physical response especially in extreme conditions. I make sketch book and mental notes, using words, marks, reminders of a physical sensation which inform both my paintings and metal work. Paintings, usually in acrylic are highly textured, jewellery is textured and organic in nature, reflecting my thoughts and feelings for beloved places.
