Lizzie Swarbrick
Lizzie is a recognised expert in Scottish medieval art and architecture, and, in her spare time, she embroiders. Some of her works are based on her academic interests, others on her love of the natural world. Each one is hand stitched and one of a kind, using her late grandma Bertha’s embroidery threads. In particular, Lizzie’s work focuses on the often-overlooked micro-landscapes around us. Close scrutiny of these communities of mosses, algae, and lichens reveals beautiful tiny worlds teeming with colour and life. Other works are macro studies of deep time in our landscape – from prehistoric earthworks to the play of light on medieval stones. Lizzie explores unexpected parts of our habitat, human-made and natural, gaining a deeper, meditative connection to them with every tiny stitch.
