Maria Robledo

Maria is an artist based in East Lothian. Her work is rooted in the surrounding landscape, drawing on its shifting light and atmosphere to create images that resist fixed definition.

Often beginning with something fleeting—a glint of light or the way the sun falls across the land—her process is intuitive and responsive. She works with light as both subject and medium, building layers that echo the subtle rhythms and textures of perception.

Colour and surface are central to her practice. Through the careful juxtaposition and layering of tone, she dissolves detail rather than defines it, allowing space for ambiguity and interpretation.

Working from a yurt in her garden, Maria often paints from small photographs taken on her iPhone. These serve as points of departure rather than references, enabling a move beyond representation towards a more atmospheric, painterly language..
